gypsybums

i first heard of lorcan mak on brodinski’s may top ten chart when he got the number one spot. i then gathered some of his songs, listened to them and followed him on twitter, because i really think he is someone to watch out for. at just 20, he already has held residency at one of dublin’s best electro nights. the variety of sounds he uses in the tracks really make them stand out from the other stuff being produced right now. gypsy bum reminds me of my girl spanish ally, because she is a gypsy and has the best bum. when she is in town, you can find us in one of montreal’s dive shisha bars dancing with turkish men, blowing smoke rings, and being serenaded by arabian royalty. check out lorcan’s myspace to learn more about HIM!

Lorcan Mak – Crack Shack

as i was in america for the summer, a new dj duo was born in montreal…and they are growing up fast! 2live = djs MR.JiM + PERKs. from throwing insane house parties, to tearing up the floors of the green room on st. laurent or spinning the upstairs of le social, their sets are simply electrifying. I want to put in a sentence about how it all started thanks to me when I bought PERKs his first turntables, but I won’t because I am modest. After djing for a couple of years on their laptops, PERKs miraculously obtained turntables one day and the magic was born.  They might have only started djing recently, but they are already getting a lot of attention from locar bar/club owners, event producers/promoters, empire skate company, and veteran montreal djs. their fast paced mixes include a range of electro beats from minimal to heavy dance tracks. these guys are always 2 steps ahead of what everyone else is listening to, mixing the newest sounds into their groovy sets.  click on their logo to view their facebook group. feverray
i’ve caught it. i have the fever ray fever.  ive been listening to it on repeat at the office for the past three days know and am confused as to why i hadn’t heard of it until recently.  fever ray is the self titled solo album of karin dreijer andersson of swedish electronic duo The Knife. the first single ‘if i had a heart’ came out in december of 2008. my favorite song off the album is probably triangle walks. i love the tiga 1234 remix…i don’t know why but it makes me feel like i am some electro warrior princess walking through the jungle capable of anything. and the best news is fever ray will be headlining at pop montreal on october 1st at metropolis. details HERE.

whenever i feel a little low on self esteem or am in need of some attention, i put on something from dita & bella, because i know i’ll receive compliments from at least 75% of everyone i talk to that day. with everyone else wearing the same urban oufitters’ skirts and AA tanks, these creations definitely stand out in a crowd. being made mostly from recycled materials, each piece is unique and eco-friendly, making it on the cutting edge of fashion. since 2007, designer isabella pasinato’s collections only get lovelier. in contrast to her fun spring summer collection, the fall winter collection takes on a sultry, urban chic look (collection to be released mid-august). check out current and previous collections at www.ditabella.com or visit a montreal boutique:

i was pretty excited when i figured out that atrak was including seattle in his 10,000 lb hamburger tour. even though i was going to see him at HARD (la) in august, i always enjoy seeing DJs at smaller venues.  i also really like treasurefingers. and even though i love shaking it to rye rye (who has dropped from the tour) theophilus london is a pretty great replacement. i am also pretty excited for duck sauce (collab between a-trak + armand van helden), their first EP “greatest hits” is dropping in september. can’t wait! all i got is montreal love for atrak.

a few of their beats: (come out to their show + buy their albums)

Duck Sauce – aNYway

Duck Sauce – You\’re Nasty

 A-Trak – Say Whoa

Treasure Fingers – Cross The Dancefloor

Theophilus London & Ezra Koeing – Warm Heart Of Africa

Theophilus London – Computer Love

can’t wait to hear what locals the dowlz and ok dave are all about!

10,000 lb hamburger tour dates can be found here.

this is one of the most amazing films i have ever seen. it’s funny, it’s sad, it’s beautifully filmed, but above all things, it is real. it is about a real neighborhood and real teenage life. i hate movies were 20 year olds play kids who are supposed to 15. where the main character loses her father, gets arrested, goes into a coma and goes from being a ‘nerd’ to winning the cheerleading competition and dating the prom king in a month. i had the chance of speaking to directors Henry Bernadet and Myriam Verreault when they were in seattle, who revealed that the actors were chosen from the high school they attended. they had no acting experience and many scenes were improvised. this film may be set in quebec, but this is the life of a group of kids over 24 hours, and i believe that no matter where or when you grew up, you can relate those simple, uniquely teenage moments found in the film.

off the sound track:

We Are Wolves – Magique

Boards Of Canada – Dayvan Cowboy

Duchess Says – CCUT

Marconi Union – Sleepless
